Black and White Enamel Earrings - Sgrafitto Design

Handmade enamel earrings in black and white powder and liquid enamels with sgrafitto line design.
Discs were cut from copper sheet and enamelled in a layer of black opaque enamel. A white liquid enamel was then painted on top of the black and the line design scratched through the dried liquid layer. This technique is called 'sgrafitto' and literally means to scratch. The firing process has also created some crackling in the liquid layer of enamel which adds to the organic look of the earrings.
The backs of the earrings are also enamelled in a smoky black shade that I've etched to give the enamel a matt texture. The earrings are finished with handmade oxidized sterling silver earwires with ball decoration.
